Hadrian's Wall

Stretching 73 miles from coast to coast, Hadrian’s Wall was built to guard the wild north-west frontier of the Roman Empire. Discover the remains of the forts, towers, turrets and towns that once kept watch over the Wall. The wall is just over half an hour away, north of Haltwhistle.

Haltwhistle Open Air Swimming Pool

The open air pool at Haltwhistle is a great place to spend a day with the family in the summer months, offer three pools, water slide and onsite cafe less than half an hour from Salvin House.

South Tynedale Railway

The South Tynedale Railway is a preserved, 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge heritage railway in Northern England and is England's highest narrow gauge railway. Located less than two minutes walk from your front door.

High Force Waterfall

High Force is a waterfall on the River Tees, near Middleton-in-Teesdale, England. The waterfall is within the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), just like Alston, and the European Geopark. It has appeared in numerous movies, including 1917.

England's highest market town is also home to England's highest golf course, and Alston Moor Golf Club offers one of the most stunning backdrops to any round of golf in the UK.

Yad Moss Ski Club

When there's enough snow, you can ski at Yad Moss, one of England’s few real-snow ski and snowboard areas, just 11km to the south if Alston. With England's longest ski tow and multiple runs, it's a genuine winter sports experience. Whoever said there was nothing to do in Alston out of season?

Lowther Castle and Gardens

Of the many treasures waiting to be discovered in the English Lake District, Lowther Castle is a particular gem. Built at the turn of the 19th century on the site of two previous houses, the castle was a grand affair boasting a room for every day of the year.
